Objectives for Week 1

This first week is an introduction to the module. Most students are not familiar with Linux and so we have a quick introduction to computers and the Linux operating system.

Listed below are the week's objectives. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have met the week's objectives.

You should understand

1. the purpose of the module CA165.
2. what is required of you to pass the module, and what effort you will have to put into the module.

You should be able to

1. access the module web site.
2. use an editor to create files.
3. manipulate files; in particular
   • to create, view, rename, copy and delete files.
   • to create and delete directories (folders).
4. distinguish between the terminal window and the graphical user interface, and to know when it is appropriate to use the terminal.
5. run programs from the terminal.
6. compile and run a simple program.
7. briefly describe what an object is, what attributes and methods are.
