This web page contains information about the module "Computer Programming
1" also known (in DCU speak) as CA165.
After 12 weeks you will be able to design and create short Java programs,
and you will be well prepared for "Computer Programming 2", or CA166
which starts in the second semester.
To help you learn to program you should use all the following
- Lectures: there will be three one-hour lectures a week where programming concepts
are presented.
- Workshops these are small group discussions where the concepts are
solidified.
- Laboratories (Labs) and Lab Tutors: You will write programs in the labs;
the only way to learn to program is to actually write programs. The Lab
Tutors are second year students who will help you to understand the lab
exercises. These students finished CA165 last year and will understand the
problems you might have.
- The Textbook: The text book is an essential reference.
- These web pages: They contain the lecture notes, the lab exercises, advice
and lots of other information.
- Other students: It is important to get help from and to help other students.
- Use email and the discussion board to communicate with the lecturer,
tutors and other students.
So what should I do now?
Familiarise yourself with the computers in the labs, access and study the
web pages, buy the textbook. Learn how to use email.
Read the introduction and then read the main web page (also known as the Home Page).
And read the guide to the home page.
